Title: Loose Change
Featuring: Edward White
Date: 2/7/13
Location: Defiance Promo Booth
[The Defiance Promo Booth.]
[Or at least that's what we were told it was. In all honesty, the booth, complete with spilt stains on the floor, yellowing walls from nicotine and cigar smoke and rotting tiled ceilings could have been an elaborate remake just for Edward White. The Billion Dollar man stood in front the Defiance banner with cigar hanging out of his mouth.]
[The word cowardice might be used to describe White's exit from Defiance Episode 33. His fast exit after abandoning his tag team partner and letting the wolves tear him apart lent to this descriptor. But Edward White didn't look fearful at all, he smiled. But why should he fear? He was likely in the basement of one of his million dollar homes. He likely had Hector Perez's primo do the set design to avoid even the chance encounter with Cancer Jiles.]
[According to White, this is part of the business plan.]
[The only thing off about the set was a marble pedestal with a golden bell sitting on top.]
[Edward continues to smile.]
"Claira St. Sure...
"The last time we fought, you won. And you left me feel the wrath of a woman scorn with the Untouchabreaker. You even added insult to injury by wrenching that hold in after the bell rang."
[He claps slowly.]
"Congratulations. Kudos, in fact. You really stuck it to me. And it was well deserved. It was truly fitting for your plight, your cause, all the hell you went through at War Games.
"But, there's something you don't know about that night, Miss Sure.
"You weren't supposed to win that night. You were supposed to have fell victim to the Stock Market Drop, just like Cancer Jiles did earlier in the night. You were supposed to suffer the same brain damaging concussion that Christian Light suffered from at War Games. And it was supposed to end with the same slow, agonizing count with the sweet sweet sounds of the crowd hissing and booing in stereo.
"You were supposed to lose."
[Edward White ashes on the floor. Even if this was his set, inside his basement, inside his mansion, he had the same contempt for Defiance and their faithful.]
"What happened? Why did you win and go onto be a final competitor in the master of wrestling exhibition? And why did I have to see a chiropractor for a month after our encounter?
"I'll tell you. It was because Virgin Airlines ran late.
"I had Jane Katze on a flight out from Orlando, hidden in a cloud of obscurity and neglect, to emerge to destroy you in the backstage. Everyone remembers Tonya Harding and her plot against Nancy Kerrigan. I would have put that to shame. I would have put you out to pasture.
"But instead, that flight was delayed."
[He nods to himself.]
"Now, I know what you're thinking.
"Edward White can't win a fair fight to save his life.
"... Fine. I'll accept that."
[White puffs on his cigar.]
"I've never denied that fact, I endorse that like I do my checks. By any funds necessary, right?
"But sometimes, you just need to let someone know that they got lucky. That fate interfered with someone's plans. Kai Scott can even take credit for delaying that flight, for saving your ass and causing my health care premium to go up. I don't really care Claira.
"What I care about is keeping the FIST of Defiance around my fat cat waist.
"And of course, you want this title belt. Aleco Dentari wanted this belt, so did Bronson Box. Hell, I bet Cancer Jiles just wants this belt to leave me with egg on my face, both metaphorically and literally.
"But none of them will get it and neither will you."
[Edward rings the bell vigorously in his hand. Proving that this was in fact not the Defiance promo booth, Nicky Corrozzo rolls in a fireplace. A log sat inside of it, it was just for show. But the flames behind it, powered by butane or propane were real. Jane Katze brings in the FIST of Defiance on a silver platter.]
"That belt, the FIST of Defiance, will NOT trade hands. It will not be held by anyone other than Prestonia Jefferson Investments.
"I would sooner burnt, melt or incinerate this championship than let you or anyone else have this championship."
[Edward White snatches the championship from Jane and dangles the belt in front the opening of the fireplace.]
"And while it would mean nothing for me to destroy this belt, only a representation of the non-tangible title, it would please me to no extent to know that the original, this championship would be lost by any means necessary, by any funds necessary but mainly by my hands."
[He cackles, taking the championship away from the steady flames.}
"You can call it desperation.
"But desperation does not cause a man to terminate him long time business partner, to let a former friend be victimized by four violent wrestlers.
"This is the business plan. This is what is supposed to happen.
"This is for the greater good."
[Edward White nods to himself, looking at the championship, flames dancing in its reflection.]
"Claira, this time around. There won't be a delayed flight. I will have no excuses.
"Because I will win.
[White laughs again, this time more subdued.]
"Defiance can't stop me. No one... no one can stop me.
"I guarantee it.
"I guarantee... Change."
