The DEFIANCE crew was invited into the rented home of Dan Ryan in Osaka. Interestingly, Dan Ryan himself didn't make an appearance, but staff at the home delivered an audio recording to them as they answered the door. More than one member of the crew expressed irritation at having been summoned, as they turned out to be completely unneeded, but the door was immediately shut in their faces.

 

The recording, revealing a quiet, almost whispering Dan Ryan:

 

"Bronson.... how's Japan treating you, Bronson? Well I hope. I have to hope and think that over the last few weeks you've spent some time reflecting about your current lot in life. Friends falling by the wayside at every turn.... honor escaping your grasp time and time again... You've been trying really hard to get deep and psychological with me and you think your accusations will have some sort of impact on what... our next encounter?... your ability to be the FIST again?...."

 

"I'm touched by the ultimate respect and rapport you managed to have with the people in your path whom who managed to mentally control and ultimately destroy... I know it would be so much easier for you if I would just roll over, have a meltdown like so many before and succumb to your charms...."

 

[a muffled chuckle]

 

"You keep asking for the real me... maybe you want it and maybe you don't. Our actions are born from conscious decisions we make and I've decided to leave a certain manner of living behind me.... and you talk about respect. A real villain cares very little for respect, Bronson. A real villain doesn't hint and foreshadow and give loud soliliquoys about their plans. You watch too many movies. In the real world, the villain slips in the backdoor and slits your family's throat in the night."

 

"You want me to admit that what happened to Virginia Quell was an accident. It was a moment of weakness, nothing more. It requires no further explanation. Blood is what you want and blood is everything I'm willing to give, my friend. Whatever this business demands of me is everything I'm willing to do to complete the task in front of me. You're the sideshow here, not me. I'm the motherfucking main event. If you want to see the color of my soul, you won't have to look very far. Go ahead...."
