Title: Two conversations

Heidi’s first instinct when she found out she was going to have to wrestle on Evolution was to quit.

“Well, looks like I’m right back into retirement.  Shortest comeback ever?”  She asked Jeff Andrews.

“Tied for.  Remember that time Alex Constantine came back to OLW to get back at you for the CAL World Title match, and then he’d already disappeared by the time the next card came out?”

Jeff wasn’t seemingly interested in humoring her.  It was like his mind was elsewhere.

Of course, since he’d stepped down as Defiance staff, she couldn’t resign directly to him, or expect him to do all the paperwork.  So she went into the offices to talk to Cito Conarri, because she wasn’t going to give Elijah Goldman or anyone associated with him the time of day.

She explained herself.  How she was tired of proving herself to people who’d deny the evidence right in front of their faces, or look down and mumble when she confronted them and then make up reasons why none of it counted later.  Cito listened patiently, and when she was done speaking, he asked her something.

“Have you thought about sticking around on Evolution League for another reason?”

“Like what?  The only thing I could possibly accomplish in evo is to try and prove I’m not afraid of Dan Ryan and I wasn’t ducking him.  Only that’s suddenly not possible, because he got himself injured.”

Cito smiled.

“Actually Heidi, I was thinking less of proving things, and more of… doing things.  Just because you don’t work for Heritage League doesn’t mean you can’t continue to represent its interests…”

She blinked.

Cito touched his nose.

Then he said, “And if you don’t care about making it into the playoffs, Elijah Goldman doesn’t have a whole lot he can do to punish you.”

“I’ve never gone off the rails before though.”

Cito’s mildly-spoken statements had landed in her head like bombs.

Heidi had always been a good girl, a follower of the rules.  Always careful to avoid lapses in professionalism, anything that could give the naysayers that have always dogged her, something to dig into.

Always professional.

Always careful to follow the unwritten rules to a T.

Always the good girl she plays in the ring.

“Yeah, and now you’ve got a chance.”  Jeff Andrews was grinning.  He didn’t play by the rules when he didn’t want to, enjoying a certain imperviousness that came with his sixth sense of negotiating the business and a massive sense of conceit to go with it.  “If Goldman wants you on his roster and you don’t want to be there, it’s your duty, AS AN AMERICAN, to make him regret it.  Say all the things you’ve wanted to say, smash all the props you want to.  Smash ALL of the things!”

She rolled her eyes at this one, but she was still listening.

“I mean, for you this time, it’s consequences-free!  You can say and do ANYTHING, and then say you were just doing it to piss off Goldman and his sports-entertainers, and so it’s for the greater good.  Well maybe not anything, you can’t attack the fans or anything like that, but you can mess with his matches and screw up his shows and he’ll never just punish you because that would hurt his ego.  And he’ll even be paying you for the privilege.”

“I don’t know if I want to just go around indiscriminately attacking everything…” she said, half to herself.  “It’s not like I hate every single person who’s working for EVO.  Only the boss and maybe three quarters of the wrestlers and Angus Skaaland.  But…”

And then, she realized what to do about being drafted.

“Jeff, I’m going to wrestle for Evolution League and do everything I can to represent Heritage League while I’m there.  I’m going to tear evo apart from the inside.”
