The More things Change...

Lance Warner, intrepid journalist and website contributor for this very website, takes a moment to personally reflect on the recent goings on behind the scenes of DEFIANCE both at Television and in the Office.

The More Things Change…
An editorial by Lance Warner

I find myself sitting here, not sure why, just trying to put this all into focus. To say that things have been “strange” around the office or at TV lately would be putting it mildly to say the least. This promotion might as well have been named “Political Scheming” instead of DEFIANCE Wrestling, because Christ knows we’ve been through the ringer.

First there was Elijah Goldman and the network fiasco.

Then there was Jeff Andrews and Untouchablegate.

More Goldman and crew…

We’ve been thrown off the air twice because of the actions of a lone psychopath, lowballed in America, kicked while we were down, and most recently bought out by Edward White in what could only be labeled as “shady dealings” if we were being really, really nice.

Now, with Eddy White running the office and threatening contracts with every other breath, you’d think that people would rally around the owner, founder, and natural leader of DEFIANCE, Eric Dane, right? And they want to, I know they want to because *I* want to, but what does he do to inspire the troops?

He drops Dusty Griffith on his head.

He’s actually taking a title shot, handed to him on a silver platter by Ed White himself.

Seriously? This is what we’re doing now?

Every week at the DEFplex the situation heightens, and the atmosphere thickens. Gone is the laughing and joking nature that is a wrestling backstage area, because nobody knows where the next round of crazy is coming from. Take a look at last week, Dusty Griffith and Eric Dane, who are supposed to be on the same page regardless of their upcoming title match at Ed White’s Executive Decision pay-per-view, wouldn’t even be seen in the same room together.

Put this into perspective: Frank Dylan James, the Mastadon from the Mountains himself, found himself as the unlikely go-between for the Champ and the Founder. Can you believe that? Frank delivering heated messages back and forth between two bull-headed egos like Eric Dane and Dusty Griffith? It’s a wonder nobody’s been killed, and that’s not even the end of it.

Sam Turner, Jr has turned to the dark side.

Eugene Dewey has taken to hanging out by himself more and more.

The White Knights might as well be dicks in the dirt done. There is no leadership in the lockerrooms unless you count Jane Katze prancing around doing her best impression of Kelly Evans (which no one does). Honestly, I don’t know how much money White is sinking into DEFIANCE, but I can only wonder how long it’ll be enough to keep this sinking ship afloat.

For my own part, I tried to appeal to Eric Dane’s better judgement, the one day that he managed to make it into the office this week. He kept blowing me off, telling me “Later Lance, I’ve got business…” but I checked up on him, he didn’t do anything.

And it’s not for a lack of trying, either. The fact of the matter is, and as much as anyone is loathe to admit it, but Edward White has a fundamental knowledge of business that makes the old DEFIANCE model look awkward and outmoded, leaving it’s guru listless and directionless in his own offices. And don’t take this as if to say that White’s way is saving the company, either. Morale is at an all time low, motivation is almost non-existent, as a matter-of-fact, the only people who seem to be happy to show up to work anymore are on White’s payroll, be in the Diamond Protective Services or his very own Blood Diamonds.

Myself personally, I try to get lost in my work.

And then I find myself here, at 2:11 in the morning, tapping away at my laptop, hoping nothing more than to knock something loose somewhere, anywhere, so that we can pull ourselves up once again out of the muck and be what we always set out to be.

The most DEFIANT wrestling promotion on the planet.

Is it a pipe dream?

Time will tell.

But just like everyone who’s still here, you can better believe I’ll see it through to the end.

Even if posting this editorial is the last thing I do in DEFIANCE.
