DEFlive: 004 (1st Round Trios Endurance Tourney Matches)
National Guard Armory - 700 Seats (Sold Out)
Referees: Hector Navarro and Mark Shields
Host / Ring-Announcer: Angus Skaaland
LIVE NOTES:
The show opened with Angus Skaaland, huge pop, obvs. Everybody loves Angus. Skaaland warmed up the crowd and previewed the show a little bit. We’d be getting the first half of the FIRST ROUND of the DEFIANCE Trios Endurance Tourney! In addition to a DEFIANCE ONSLAUGHT TITLE MATCH! With Big FDJ accepting the title challenge of BRAZEN’s newest roster member… THE GOD-BEAST, Mushigihara! The Faithful popped hard for the announcement of the HUGE main event tonight in NOLA!
First Round Match
Viking War Cult © vs. Gulf Coast Connection
MATCH REPORT:
Aaron King, Theodore Cain and the masked Crescent City Kid… well the hometown boys came out with a lot of enthusiasm, that can’t be denied. That enthusiasm however was quickly squashed when the first chords of “Guardians Of Asgaard” by Amon Amarth roared through the two huge speakers that flanked the modest entrance curtain. The three lithe high flyers all huddled together for a little last minute game plan refinement as the reigning DEFIANCE Trios Champions Cul and The Holstrom Brothers were lead to the ring by their… for lack of a better term, INSURANCE policy Torvald The Destroyer. There’s no words to describe Torvald, you just have to see this beast in person. Honest to God biggest goddamn pro wrestler I’ve ever laid eyes on.
King, Cain and the Kid had a lot of quick tags early on, and right out of the gate we all figured “hey, maybe this isn’t going to be as bad a squash as we all thought when we saw the brackets” but alas all it took was one ill-timed trip to ringside by Cain and the Kid and one HUGE double spear from the monstrous Torvald and the Gulf Coast Connection… well, they never really quite recovered. The flawless tag team technique of Floki and Ivar and the sheer brutality of Cul’s stiff bone rattling strikes leaves little doubt as to the eventual winner of this short, brutal match.
WINNERS, STILL TRIOS CHAMPS: THE VIKING WAR CULT
LIVE NOTES:
The fans weren’t too displeased with the Vikings victory (nobody likes the Gulf Coast Connection, like at all) despite the Vikings usual sketchy Torvald-fueled road to victory. Cul, Floki and Ivar took to the ring posts and hoisted their Trios titles high as Torvald the Destroyer wandered ringside SCREAMING at the front row fans like a goddamn maniac. I’m pretty sure I saw a kid start crying.
First Round Match
Osaka Hate Crime vs. MDM4, Butcher Victorious + Sho Nakazawa
MATCH REPORT:
The New Violence Express tandem of Tendo and Yahagi exploded out from behind the curtain with their Osaka Hate Crime trios partner big Kazuo Akamatsu trailing behind taking the time to look scornfully out over the crowd. The cobbled together babyface team all made their entrances separately, Muerte getting the biggest pop of the bunch. Butcher and Akamatsu took some time before the bell to jaw back and forth a little bit. The talking was short lived as Kazuo went low with a cheap shot on Victorious right as referee Shields called for the opening bell. The Japanese contingent were caught off guard in the early goings by the surprisingly fluid tag team work of Nakazawa and Muerte.
Things were going great guns for the babyface team… that was, before Nakazawa mistimed a suicide dive, leveling his teammates on the outside. Muerte took the worst of it and from that point on was visibly upset at his fellow mascara and tag team partner. With their opponents team unity falling to pieces the dastardly New Violence Express duo of Tendo and Yahagi used that to their advantage, setting the rattled MDM4 up perfectly for their partner big Kazuo Akamatsu who DRILLED the luchador with a spine compressing stump puller piledriver for the win.
WINNERS: OSAKA HATE CRIME
LIVE NOTES:
As the ring was being cleared, Skaaland announced that in September and October BRAZEN would crown it’s VERY FIRST singles champion as the BRAZEN CHAMPIONSHIP CHASE. The BRAZEN Championship will be exclusive to BRAZ and come with one caveat, a superstar can only hold the BRAZEN title a total of THREE times in their entire career. 20 men and women will participate in the giant two block round robin to decide the inaugural champ kicking off this very next month!
First Round Match
The Safety Patrol vs. Hotboys + Howlin’ Joe Wolfe
MATCH REPORT:
Sgt. Safety and his Time Clock Cowboys showed surprising teamwork as right out of the gate they isolated and worked over young Mike Sloan Jr. After loosing himself from Safety’s grip, Sloan leapt towards his corner and the outstretched hand of his Hotboys tag team partner Sean Peters only to catch nothing but air. One of the Timeclock Cowboys having yanked Peters off the apron. The son and namesake of wrestling legend and DEF producer Mike Sloan absorbed all manner of chickenshit cheatert. Thankfully, mostly due to Safety’s arrogant ineptitude, Sloan FINALLY made the hot tag to big Howlin’ Joe Wolfe who single handedly just tore through all three members of the Safety Patrol. Joe tagged Peters, he and Sloan popping off a series of jawbreaking superkicks that put Safety down for the count.
WINNERS: THE HOTBOYS AND HOWLIN’ JOE WOLFE
First Round Match
Southern Bastards vs. Reinhardt Hoffman + Gentlemen's Agreement
MATCH REPORT:
Everybody popped HARD for the Bastards, especially after their big win the other night on DEFtv over Cul and his followers. The pop turned to boos pretty quick, as… *deep breath* Viscount Vice Admiral Ernest Charles Sewell The Third of Long Melford, his tag team partner Oliver Tarquin Monroe and their trios partner Reinhardt Hoffman all clambered from backstage and assaulted MASSIVE Cowboy, JJ Dixon and Earl Lee Roberts from behind during their entrance. The Cowboy took the worst of the shit-kicking and ended up laid out on the ramp getting checked out by medics. The match started off three on two. Rebel Yell did their best against the three mat wizards, but started to succumb to the technical prowess of their opponents. The Faithful pop hard and Bastards fortunes changed, MASSIVE Cowboy returning to the match with FIRE in his eyes.
The elder statesman, Lord Sewell, is the unfortunate soul to find himself squaring off against the Cowboy. After several valiant reversal attempts the experienced British grappler got his head sheared from his shoulders thanks to an absolutely SICK western lariat from MASSIVE Cowboy who pinned *deep breath* ... Viscount Vice Admiral Ernest Charles Sewell The Third of Long Melford… *phew* for the pinfall victory.
WINNERS: THE SOUTHERN BASTARDS
LIVE NOTES:
Skaaland hit the ring again and filled everyone in on our main event… well, at least he tried to. Eddie Dante slithered out onto the stage and got into a little war of words with Angus. Eddie didn’t go into details of exactly WHY The God-Beast was performing for BRAZEN but alluded to the fact it wasn’t totally his choice. But that “while he’s here, he plans on tearing… this… roster… APART. Starting with that half retarded redneck PET you and Eric pinned that worthless title on. Say hello to the next D.O.C.” You could barely hear "Mach 13 Elephant Explosion" kick up over the torrent of boos Dante elicited to welcome his God-Beast, Mushigihara.
MAIN EVENT: DEFIANCE Onslaught Championship Match
Mushigihara w/ Eddie Dante vs. Frank Dylan James ©
FDJ didn’t even wait for his music to burst through the curtain. He’d obviously heard just about enough. He and Mushi clashed right at the foot of the ramp and it felt like they didn’t stop swinging for the next fifteen minutes. It was obvious, the way he sort of limp-ran down the ramp that Frank was still in rough shape after his big eight man tag. Mushi got the upper hand and just straight up TOSSED The Mastadon around like a rag doll. The sight of The God-Beast’s creepy eyeless mask suplexing Frank’s overalled, barefoot frame is going to haunt me for a while. Even though Frank’s Frank and the crowd obviously loves Frank, Mushigihara’s raw power and just vicious, reckless assault had the crowd in the palm of his hands.
But again, this is Frank Dylan James we’re talking about. Between assaults from The God-Beast, FDJ picked his spots. A forearm to the side of the mask here, a straight shot to Mushi’s barrel-like midsection there. Before long the D.O.C. was standing on his own two feet and giving it right back to Mushigihara full bore. After a particularly brutal shoulder block, Mushi took a moment to lean over the ropes and give the crowd a loud “OSUUU!” before he turned around and ate a NECK SNAPPING lariat from The Mastodon… and another… and ANOTHER. Finally having grounded Mushigihara, the crowd popped hard as Frank scaled the turnbuckle and LAUNCHED himself for his patented Mt. Top Knee Drop… TO THE DAMN FACE!
It’s not long after that brutal move we all had to pick our jaws up off the floor… Mushi having KICKED OUT of Frank’s top rope knee drop. James was so frustrated it looked like he might have pulled out a couple clumps of hair before getting to his feet, taking mount and just UNLOADING a seemingly endless stream of sharp elbows down across Mushigihara’s face. With each swing of his gnarly tree limb sized arm, the crowd only popped harder. With blood seeping through his mask, Eddie Dante screaming from ringside for his God-Beast to “GET UP! GET UUUUUUUP!”
SECOND MT. TOP KNEE DROP (to quote our host Mr. Skaaland) TO THE GORRAM FACE!
WINNER AND STILL D.O.C. : FRANK DYLAN JAMES
LIVE NOTES:
The pinfall was academic at that point. Frank didn’t even take a breather after the INSANE meatgrinder-like match he just participated in. He made laps of ringside slapping hands, letting kids (yeah, I know right… ) hold the Onslaught title belt, and taking pictures. Two matches that saw him busted open, brutalized and driven into a crazed bloodlust and the guy still shows this much love to the Faithful. Skaaland finally took the ring and told everybody that the next (already SOOOOOLD out) show featuring the rest of the Endurance Tourney first round will take place before DEFtv70. The big iPPV finale taking place not long after that.
Once again, these gorilla style DEF live events are incredible if you ever get the chance to attend.
