Title: Insolence

Diane Parker was glaring at Lisa Loeh.

Lisa Loeh was obviously trying very hard to play the role.  She shrank back, held her hands up against her chest defensively, and turned on the puppydog eyes.

“You’re lucky that Jeff Andrews is making us do this, cos I’d throw you through the nearest window if he wasn’t.”  Diane snarled.

“I’m trying to help…” Lisa said.

With a roll of her eyes and an exasperated groan, Diane spun around.  “This bitch is going to be a millstone” she said, speaking to Claira St. Sure.

Claira shrugged.

She didn’t know what to do.

From the very day he’d found her fighting on the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, through the time he smuggled her back to the United States, through her time in the WfWA and most of her Defiance career, Kai Scott had taken care of everything.  He paid for her gym memberships, argued her booking with the Defiance office, and coached her on strategy before every single match she wrestled.  And when he abandoned her, Diane Parker picked up the slack.  If she lacked Kai’s knowledge of how the gears in the business turned, she knew almost as much about how to watch a bunch of match tapes and figure out weaknesses and design a strategy to pick them apart.

Kai had never taught her how to deal with feuding tag partners.

When Jonny Booya betrayed the Truly Untouchables, it had happened so suddenly.  One week, everything was fine.  The next, he was powerbombing Kai onto a table, injuring his back… except Kai hadn’t been injured.

Was that part of the plan?

Was the entire injury fake?

Did Jonny still secretly work for Kai?

No - it wouldn’t do to think about such things.  It changed nothing.  Kai Scott had nothing to do with the match against Penn, Burke, and the giant kid they found.  Claira forced her mind off of Kai and onto the big problem – how her two tag partners hated each other for some reason.

“Diane, can we talk?”

Leaving Lisa to stand there looking like she’d been kicked, Claira lead Diane off down the hall.

“Where do you know her from and why do you hate her?” She asked.

“Training camp.  She’s a bitch.  Let me tell you about it…”

[In 2006, Diane was pretty close to officially graduating the Wrestling Inferno dojo.  If she’d known then that graduating would be the high point of her career six years later, she might’ve quit then and there… but probably not, she did love wrestling from the minute she stepped into a ring.]

[Anyway, the Wrestling Inferno had tryouts every year.  A couple hundred kids would show up in downtown Baltimore and spend a day or so doing calisthenics under the watchful eyes of Cito Conarri and Charlie Strembatel.  A couple dozen would come back the next day for more calisthenics, and after they started teaching the kids to fall, there would only be a couple dozen still left.]

[After all that, the kids would be drilled on wrestling, and in the end it was Cito who personally made the call on which five he would decide to teach that year.]

[There was usually a fairly large amount of girls among the new students.  Cito was known to be good at training them after Heidi’s success, other wrestling schools would send girls down to try out for him with recommendations, and a few critics, mostly guys who hadn’t made the cut and puroresu fans, said he was secretly a dirty old man who liked younger girls.  More of his classes of 5 had had a girl in them than not.]

[None of them looked like Lisa, though.]

[Most girls looked like athletes.  Those who came prettied up were immediately sent to wash the makeup and hairspray off before they started the Army Rangers inspired workout routine Cito used as his first gut check.  Lisa looked like a model.]

[Lisa also knocked off burpees, crunches, vertical jumps and lunges while athletic looking girls and dozens of boys alike threw in the towel, resigned themselves to having wasted a couple hundred dollars attending the tryout and left.  And at the end of the day, even though she didn’t look like a model anymore, she was still walking so straight as to seem insolent.]

[It didn’t just seem as though she were insolent, though.]

[By the time she’d been accepted as one of the five and been in the camp for a couple weeks, she was better known for insolence than her looks.]

“But what did she actually do?”

“The whole Wrestling Inferno system was supposed to get that sort of attitude out of its wrestlers, you know… make sure that everyone he trained loved the business.  That’s why Cito never has anything to do with Japan, because he hates beating up his students and the Japanese think it makes wrestlers undisciplined.  But Lisa took everything Cito could teach her, and every punishment Charlie could think up, and shrugged them off.”

[She was just too athletic to humiliate, and too devious to trick or thwart, and she ended up graduating the Wrestling Inferno with full honors.]

“And then instead of doing anything with it, she started managing.  She tried to seduce Jeff Andrews. She did seduce Roger Stevens.  And probably Yoshikazu YAZ.  All she wants to do is try and make money and fame at the expense of pro wrestling.”

[Claira shook her head.  She’d never been to a wrestling training school.  She’d come in with a enough of a background in Muy Thai and Jujitsu that she hadn’t needed it, and she’d gotten the rest of her training one on one with Kai.]

[What Lisa was doing didn’t seem admirable.  But then, not everything Kai had done was admirable, and he’d taught her that being admirable wasn’t needed to succeed.  And anyway hadn’t Diane helped her cheat in War Games and encouraged her to cheat in her singles match against Light?]

“I don’t understand why that makes you hate her so much, though.”
